On Wednesday March 7, 2012 the Cortez Fire Protection District was dispatched for a structure fire and possible gas explosion at a residence at 414 N. Beech Street. The report also stated there was a female still inside the residence. The initial call came in at 6:10 pm and within four minutes the first units were on scene. Upon their arrival they found a single story residence with flames coming from the bedroom windows and heavy smoke from the doorway and other windows. The first arriving engine crew immediately went to work doing exactly what they were trained to do. A 1 ¾" hoseline was pulled by one firefighter while the engineer of the apparatus charged it with water and foam to begin an immediate fire attack while two other members entered the structure to search for the reported victim. On this particular emergency we were fortunate to have four qualified and certified personnel on the first responding engine. The crew successfully found the resident and successfully affected a rescue of an adult female. Once removed the victim was transferred to the waiting EMS crew from Southwest Ambulance who swiftly transported her to Southwest Memorial Hospital Emergency Room. She was later flown to a Burn Center for treatment of her injuries. The quick response of emergency crews from both the Cortez Fire Protection District and Southwest Ambulance can be credited for the victim's survival.
