Local Government Governance

The Cortez Fire Protection District (CFPD) is a special local government district in Montezuma County, Colorado, dedicated to providing fire and emergency medical services. It is governed by a five-member elected board, consisting of residents or property owners within the district, who are term-limited. The board collaborates with the Fire Chief and management to set policies, manage the annual budget, establish long-term goals, and represent the community’s interests. Key responsibilities include approving policies, budgets, and expenditures, guiding the Fire Chief, and ensuring financial stability while prioritizing life safety and property conservation.

The board operates under the Special Districts Association of Colorado (SDA) and complies with Colorado’s Special District Act (Title 32, Article 1), as well as the Department of Local Affairs regulations. CFPD adheres to state laws on open records, open meetings, conflicts of interest, and ethical standards, in addition to the Local Government Budget Law and Audit Law. The SDA supports the district with legislative updates, research, communication, and training.

Board meetings occur on the third Wednesday of each month. (Calendar) For further details, you can visit the CFPD website or contact their office directly.
